Austinmer beach is a popular site for many surfers. Originally this area was called Sidmouth, but after the opening of the North Illawarra Coal Company's mine, the town was known as Austinmere linked to Henry Austin. It wasn't until 1887 it was officially called Austinmer without the 'e'.
